Nov. 5, 2004
LOS ANGELES - UCLA senior men's tennis player Luben Pampoulov won two singles matches Friday to advance to the semifinals at the 48th Southern California Intercollegiate Championships held at the Los Angeles Tennis Club.
Pampoulov, the tournament's top seed, started the day with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over BYU's Nima Roshan. He advanced to the semifinals after teammate Philipp Gruendler had to pull out of their quaterfinal singles match. Pampoulov was leading 3-2 in the first set when Gruendler retired due to injury.
Pampoulov is the lone remaining UCLA singles player in the tournament, as four other Bruin players were beaten Friday. In addition to Gruendler, freshman Mathieu Dehaine, eighth-seeded Kris Kwinta, and second-seeded Alberto Francis all dropped matches.
In doubles play, top-seeded Francis and Kwinta won their opening-round match over Pepperdine's Kevin Borzenski/Alexis Rafidison.
