Bruin Volleyball Continues Domination of Cal with Five-Game Victory
Nov. 6, 2004
BERKELEY, Calif. - UCLA and California have met 46 times on the volleyball court, and the result has always been the same: a UCLA victory. It was no different on Friday night at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif., as UCLA (15-8, 8-5 Pac-10) defeated California (12-9, 7-5 Pac-10) with game scores of 30-22, 30-24, 32-30, 24-30, 15-10. Nana Meriwether and Nancy Barba each had a team-high 15 kills for the Bruins in the match. It was the second year in a row that Cal has lost to UCLA in five games at Haas Pavilion.
UCLA had a balanced offensive attack with Nancy Barba and Nana Meriwether producing 15 kills apiece. Brynn Murphy and Becky Green had 14 kills apiece and Chrissie Zartman had a match- and career-high 31 digs. Cal hit .218 and UCLA hit .215 for the match.
The Bears started the match off well, winning game one convincingly, 30-22, behind Gabrielle Abernathy's strong hitting as she registered five kills with no errors in seven attempts. UCLA battled back with a 30-24 win in game two. The turning point in the match might have been in game three when Cal had a 30-29 lead, but freshman Angie Pressey had a ball-handling error, the Bruins' Green followed with a kill and then Abernathy's kill attempt found the net, giving UCLA the 32-30 win.
The Bears did capture game four, 30-24, with a Pressey kill and Samantha Carter service ace giving Cal the opportunity to play a fifth game. Unfortunately for the Bears, UCLA jumped out to 5-1 lead in game five and proceeded to cruise to the 15-10 win, getting the final score on a Meriwether kill.
The Bruins return to Pauley Pavilion on Friday night with a 7 pm match against cross-town rival USC for a Lexus Gauntlet matchup.
