Bruins In Third After Day One of Purdue Invitational

Cyndi Gallagher's UCLA swimming and diving team finished day one of the Purdue Invitational in third place with 156 points on Friday, just behind Florida and Texas A&M.

Junior Kim Vandenberg had the highest finish for the Bruins on Friday, finishing second in the 50 Freestyle (23.30). Sophomore Katie Arnold also picked up points for UCLA in the 50 Freestyle with a 12th place finish (24.06). Sophomore Katie Nelson placed sixth in the 500 Freestyle (4:52.00). Sophomore Jane Imagane and freshman Shannon Hackett also scored in the 500 Free. Imagane was 11th (4:53.75), while Hackett was 13th (4:55.14). Senior Kim Scarborough (2:05.03) and sophomore Courtney Iversen (2:05.58) finished 11th and 15th respectively in the 200 IM.

The Bruins had two teams score in the 200 Freestyle relay The team of Arnold, Vandenberg, Amy Thurman, and Kendall Butler placed third (1:33.93), while the team of Lindsay Smart, Hackett, Scarborough and Katherine Wong were 12th (1:37.51). In the 400 Medley Relay, two Bruin teams picked up points. The team of Arnold, Eileen Seissen, Vandenberg and Thurman finished fourth (3:46.43), while the team of Iversen, Chiemi Yamamoto, Butler, and Wong placed 16th (3:55.87).

In one-meter diving competition, juniors Amanda Blong (251.70) and Paige Thompson (241.90) finished fourth and fifth respectively. Senior Janine Strack was 16th with 202.35 points.

On Saturday, the Bruins will head back to the pool with their eyes on a top-three finish. Swimming and three-meter diving competition begins at 11:00 am (ET), while platform diving begins at 4:30 pm.
