Barnes and Burdette Fall in ITA National Indoor Finals

Nov. 7, 2004

Stanford's doubles pair Alice Barnes and Erin Burdette fell in the finals at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Championships this morning at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center to Northwestern's Audra Cohen and Cristelle Grier, 8-2.

The ITA National Indoors title is the second straight for Grier; last year she won it with Jessica Rush. She joins Stanford's Gabriela Lastra (2001) as the only player in tournament history to win doubles title with two different partners.

In Tempe, Ariz., the third and final day of the Thunderbird Classic was cut short due to rain that began last night and lasted into the morning. Stanford freshman Whitney Deason and Lejla Hodzic toppled TCU's Paige Brown and Andrea Morgado, 8-4, in the main draw doubles semifinals. Deason and Hodzic were set to play Jessica Shuand Cristina Vidal Visico of Cal for the title, but time did not permit the championship match.

Deason and Hodzic had earlier advanced to the finals in the singles main draw, but the match was postponed and will be decided on a to be determined future date at Stanford.

The Cardinal will finish up the fall season when it travels to Honolulu for a dual meet with Hawaii on Nov. 23. Stanford will resume competition in January when the Cardinal travels to Seattle for the Pac-10 Indoor Championships (Jan. 14-16).
