No. 13 Cal Falls to No. 17 Washington, 1-0, in Regular-Season Finale
Nov. 7, 2004
SEATTLE, Wash. - No. 13 California lost to No. 17 Washington, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Field in both team's regular-season finale. The Golden Bears are now 11-5-3 (4-3-2 Pac-10), while the Huskies are 14-4-1 (5-3-1 Pac-10).
Cal and Washington are both expected to be among the 64 teams named to the NCAA Tournament when the bids are announced Monday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. PT on ESPNews. The Bears, who finished 2003 at 7-8-4, are looking to earn their sixth postseason selection in the last seven years.
UW's Tina Frimpong scored the game's only goal, her 12th of the season, in the 28th minute on a header. Kelley Schweighart sent a free kick from the left side to the far right of the goal. Clare Rustad was able to re-direct the ball back to the goalmouth where Frimpong stood.
Cal's most dangerous opportunity came in the 24th minute when freshman midfielder Chioma Igwe's 20-yard blast from the right side forced goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen to dive to her right for the save. Igwe posted the game-winning goal Friday in Cal's 1-0 shutout at Washington State.
Rasmussen registered three saves for the Huskies who outshot Cal by a 13-11 margin. The Bears held a 3-1 shots-on-goal advantage. Freshman forward Caroline Lea led Cal with four shots, while Frimpong had six for Washington.
