Stanford Set to Play Cal Poly In First Round of NCAA Tournament

Stanford women's soccer earned its seventh-consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament today when it was announced that the Cardinal will head to Santa Clara for the first round of the 2004 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament. Stanford will face Cal Poly (11-2-6) on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Cardinal finished the regular season with a 12-5-3 record, including a 4-3-2 mark in Pac-10 play.
Stanford leads the all-time against Cal Poly, 3-0. The schools have faced off twice in the postseason, with the Cardinal winning a 3-1 decision in the second round in 1999 and a 4-0 victory in the first round in 2002. Stanford is 11-12-2 (.480) all-time in the postseason. Last year the Cardinal lost a 1-0 decision to Santa Clara at Buck Shaw Stadium in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Santa Clara, the No. 16 seed in the tournament will take on California at 2 p.m. on Friday, followed by the Stanford-Cal Poly match-up. The winners of the first round games will play on Sunday at noon.
The Pac-10 earned five bids to the NCAA Tournament with Arizona, Cal, Stanford, UCLA and Washington each earning a place. The College Cup concludes Dec. 3 and 5 in Cary, N.C., at SAS Soccer Park. North Carolina State, the Capital Area Soccer League and the Town of Cary will serve as hosts.
