Women's Rowing To Attend The Head Of The Lake Competition

THIS WEEK -- The UCLA Women's rowing team travels to Seattle, WA to compete in the annual Head of the Lake Competition on Sunday, Nov. 14th. One Varsity team is entered in the 4700 m race, where all of the squads will be racing against the clock. This the first year that UCLA has entered its Varsity crew in the Women's Open Eight as a NCAA team.
The Varsity line up for Sunday includes Liz Pallas-Jacobs (stroke), Kristin Bixel, Elizabeth Lee, Jessica Rogers, Monica Grova, Kelsey Hicks, Lauren Hamann, Emina Ong (cox). The same crew competed at both the Head of the Marina and Newport Autumn Rowing Festival the past weekend.
Top collegiate teams including the Univ. of Washington, Washington State, Oregon State, Gonzaga , Stanford and Univ. of Minnesota are scheduled to compete, providing the Bruins with a preview of their upcoming spring schedule and Pac-10 competition. Last year's winning team in the Women's Open Eight was Michigan State, which completed the course in 17:18.08.
The event, hosted by the Lake Washington Rowing Club, will start at the University of Washington Canoe House, go through Portage Bay and Lake Union, with the finish beyond the bridge in the Seattle Ship Canal. LAST RESULTS-- The Women's Varsity 'A' team captured the Head of the Marina competition on Saturday, Nov. 6 with a first place finish in the Women's Open Eight with a time of 19:20.00 - the best women's squad time at the event.
The next day, the Bruins competed in the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival, and came in a close second to rival USC in the Women's Varsity Open Eight out of a field of 23 teams, with a time of 17:05.00.
STAY TUNED-- The Bruins will return to action next year with the annual Parent and Alumni Day and Class Race on Saturday, March 5th, 2004. Pac-10 competition will begin with crosstown rival USC on March 20th, 2004.
