Cardinal Volleyball Signs Four Athletes To Letters Of Intent
Nov. 10, 2004
Stanford, Calif. - The 11th-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team signed four student-athletes to study and compete on The Farm in 2005 announced head volleyball coach John Dunning. Joining the Cardinal next season are Cynthia Barboza, Foluke Akinradewo, Erin Waller and Alex Fisher.
'First, I would like to commend Denise Corlett for a job well done with this recruiting class,' Dunning said. 'We know we are lucky to have the opportunity to coach this group for the next four years. I couldn't be more excited for our program, these four young players can have an effect on the college volleyball world.'
Foluke Akinradewo is a 6-3 middle blocker from Plantation, Florida where she attends St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Akinradewo is a three-year letterwinner in volleyball and captained her team for two seasons. She has extensive experience with the U.S. junior national program and was a member of the gold medal winning USA Junior National Team in 2004 at NORCECA. Akinradewo was tabbed Broward County Player of the Year in both 2002 and 2003. She was a second-team All-American in '03 and first-team all-state selection in '02 and '03. Her high school team is currently competing in the Florida State Championship semi's.
'Foluke is a three-sport athlete that showed an amazing commitment to her academic and athletics at her high school,' said Dunning. 'For her to have made the junior national team without a significant amount of club experience is a credit to her athleticism and her ability to learn quickly. It's also a credit to her high school coach and program to have taught her so much.'
Cynthia Barboza is a 6-0 outside hitter from Long Beach, Calif. where she attends Long Beach Wilson High School. Barboza is a four-year letterwinner in volleyball and captained the squad her junior and senior years. She earned a bronze medal as the youngest member of the USA women's national training team at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic. In 2003, Barboza became the first junior to be named Gatorade National High School Player of the Year. That season, she recorded 550 kills, 46 blocks and 38 service aces, and was the only high school player to be invited to train with the U.S. National Team in preparation for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and was the first alternate. Barboza was the 2002 National Sophomore of the Year by Student Sports Magazine and was the 2001 National Freshman of the Year by the same publication. She placed fifth at the 2004 Under-18 World Beach Championships in Termoli, Italy. Barboza played club for Club Long Beach.
'I'm excited Cynthia's is joining our program,' noted Dunning, 'in part because I'm excited to coach her. She's obviously a very bright physically gifted athlete. She has an amazing future stretching out in front of her.'
Alex Fisher is a 6-1 outside hitter from Menlo Park, Calif., where she attends Menlo School. A four-year letterwinner, she captained the team her senior season. She was tabbed the Peninsula Athletic League MVP in '04 and was a four-time first-team all-league selection as well as a three-time all-county pick. Fisher helped her team to a silver medal at the California State Championships in 2001 and '02. She was named a 'Top 50 Recruit in the Class of 2005' by prepvolleyball.com. Fisher played club for Vision Volleyball. Her club team took silver in 2004 at Junior Nationals.
'I have watched Alex play for years and have always felt she would develop into a fine player,' noted Dunning. 'She has always played very high and has worked hard to become a well skilled, all-around player. She is one of the best blockers and servers in the class. As she becomes stronger each year, she will continue to improve throughout her career here.'
Erin Waller is a 6-1 outside hitter/middle blocker from Ballwin, Missouri, where she attends Incarnate Word Academy. A four-year letterwinner, she captained the team her senior season. She was tabbed 2003 St. Louis Dispatch Player of the Year and was a '03 high school All-American. Waller led her Incarnate Word to the 2004 State of Missouri Volleyball Championship, earlier this month, after having an undefeated season. She posted 1,300 kills over her high school career and was the 2003 Gatorade Player of the Year in Missouri. Waller was tabbed prepvolleyball.com's National Junior of the Year in '03. She is a three-time all-metro and all-state selection. Waller played club for Team St. Louis.
'Any time I walked by Erin's court at a tournament I had to stop and watch,' said Dunning. 'She has a real feel for the game, is in the right place at the right time a lot, seems to see things on the court that others may not. The fact that she is very competitive and has excellent all-around skills will allow her to play more than one position in college.'
