Cardinal Men' s Swimming Wraps Up Triple Distance Meet With Cal

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford men's swimming team hosted California today in a triple distance meet at the Avery Aquatic Center on the campus of Stanford University.
At the Triple Distance Meet, a swimmer wins a category - the sprint freestyle, the distance free, the butterfly, the backstroke, the individual medley or the breaststroke - by having the fastest combined time in three events in that stroke, such as the 50 freestyle, the 100 freestyle and the 200 freestyle. There were only two relays - the 400 medley and 400 free - at the meet, which was swum in short course yards.
Stanford's Matt McDonald won the butterfly category with wins in the 50 fly (23:00), 100 fly (49.84) and a second place showing in the 200 fly (1:51.73). Cardinal Hongzhe Sun took top honors in the backstroke category with victories in the 50 back (22.78), 200 back (1:45.68) and a runner-up finish in the 100 back (48.92). Teammate Jayme Cramer was second overall with a win in the 100 back (48.84) and two second-place showings in the 50 back (22.80) and 200 back (1:48.35).
Cal's John Dorr won the IM category, with a combined time of 6:40.28, while Cardinal Tobias Oriwol was second overall, after finishing second in the 100 IM (52.21), 200 IM (1:51.35) and the 400 IM (3:58.45). Golden Bear Rolandas Gimbutis won the sprint freestyle category, with a combined time of 2:43.42 after winning the 50 (20.51), 100 (44.62) and one of the two 200 (1:38.29) free races. The Cardinal was led by Andy Grant in this category as he posted a runner-up finish in the 200 (1:38.95), fifth in the 100 (46.06) and sixth in the 50 (21.28).
Cal Henrique Barbosa took the breaststroke category in a combined time of 3:25.35, by winning the 100 (56.54) and taking second in the 50 (25.97) and 200 (2:02.84). Senior Gary Marshall was Stanford's top breaststroker, placing third in the 50 (26.27), second in the 100 (56.61) and fifth in the 200 (2:06.20). Golden Bear Daniel Lysaught won the distance free in a combined time of 15:30.11, after winning the 500 free (4:29.67) and the 1000 free (9:18.52) and placing fourth in the other 200 free race (1:41.92). The Cardinal was led by Shaun Phillips who posted a second place showing in the 1000 (9:27.26), third in the 200 (1:41.36) and fourth in the 500 free (4:32.02).
The Stanford relay team of Hongzhe Sun, Gary Marshall, Matt McDonald and Andy Grant took top honors in the 400 yard medley relay, touching the wall in 3:19.49. California won the 400 yard freestyle relay (2:58.52) while the Cardinal team of Ben Wildman-Tobriner, Jayme Cramer, Daniel Beal and Kyle Ransom took second in a time of 3:02.99.
The Cardinal are back in action next week, competing at the Speedo Cup.
