Hooker Named Second Team All-Pac-10

BERKELEY, Calif. - California freshman defender Courtney Hooker earned second team All-Pac-10 recognition for her contributions towards the Golden Bears' stingy defense in 2004. Sophomore midfielder Nadia Al-Lami, freshman midfielder Chioma Igwe and freshman forward Stephanie Wieger received honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors.

Hooker and Jodie Taylor, the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, were the only freshmen to earn spots on either the first or second All-Pac-10 teams. Hooker started all 19 regular season games, helping Cal post a 0.70 goals-against average, which ranks 24th in the NCAA and third in the Pac-10. The product of Woodland Hills, Calif., played a big role in the Bears recording 11 shutouts in 19 games, for a 0.58 shutout percentage (12th NCAA).

Al-Lami also earned honorable mention all-conference accolades as a freshman last season. In 2004, she posted a career-best eight points and ranked second on the team with four assists. More important than points, the Santa Cruz, Calif., native is relied on for her physical play, winning loose balls and setting the tempo for Cal's offense.

Igwe, a member of the U.S. under-19 national team, posted six points from one goal and four assists in her rookie campaign. As the season progressed, the Belmont, Calif., product began to exert her presence more in the midfield and showcase her passing talents. She scored the game-winning goal in Cal's 1-0 decision at Washington State.

Wieger is second on the team in points (19) and goals (7) and leads the Bears in assists (5). A product of Concord, Calif., Wieger posted game-winning goals in Cal's 1-0 triumph over then-No. 24 Arizona and in the Bears' 1-0 double overtime win over then-No. 6 UCLA. The Wildcats and the Bruins tied for the Pac-10 title at6-3.

No. 18 Cal travels to No. 4 Santa Clara tomorrow for an NCAA first-round game. Kick-off is at 2 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara. No. 19 Stanford faces Cal Poly at 4:40 p.m. The winners of both games will battle each other Sunday at noon at the same venue.
