Wesley Washington Signs on the Dotted Line
Nov. 11, 2004
Corvallis, Ore. - Wesley Washington of Compton Community College in Compton, Calif., has signed a national letter of intent to play men's basketball at Oregon State University, Beaver head coach Jay John announced Thursday.
Washington is a 6-3 180-pound guard who has also attended Yapavai Community College in Arizona, but did not play basketball. He played as a prep at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., and led the team to a 35-2 mark during the 2002-2003 season. He averaged 15.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.0 steals for his senior year. Washington and current Beaver freshman forward Marcel Jones were teammates at Mater Dei.
'Wesley brings a tremendous amount of athleticism to our program,' John said. 'He is a great competitor with excellent leadership skills. He is a player that will fit in well with this program.'
Washington was named second team Best of the West by the Long Beach Press-Telegram and the Orange County Register Player of the Year as a senior. He also was a two-time California Interscholastic Federation Player of the Year selection.
Washington joins Josh Tarver of Jesuit High School in Portland and Calvin Hampton of New Hampton Prep School in New Hampshire as the team's early letter of intent announcements. Washington will have three years of eligibility remaining when he arrives on the OSU campus next year.
The Oregon State coaching staff does not expect to sign another player during the abbreviated fall signing period that concludes Nov. 17.
