Women's Basketball Signs A Pair For 2005-06 Season

Nov. 11, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University head women's basketball coach Judy Spoelstra announced on Thursday that two student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to play basketball next season for the Beavers. Stephisha Walton, a 5-11 guard from Vallejo, CA, and Barbara Houston, a 6-1 forward from Compton, CA, will join OSU's squad for the 2005-06 campaign.

'We upped our athleticism in this class, which will help us both defensively and in our transition offense,' said Spoelstra. 'These are dynamic young ladies who perform well in the classroom, and we can expect good things from them in the future.'

Walton will join the Beaver squad after graduating from Vallejo High School. She spent the previous three seasons at St. Patrick/St. Vincent High School, where she led the team to back-to-back appearances in the CIF North Coast Section playoffs. Walton is a first team All-Bay Shore Athletic League selection, as well as an All-Area performer, and is ranked nationally in Michael White's scouting directory.

'Stephisha is a versatile player that can play both the wing and the point for us,' said OSU assistant coach and director of recruiting Jualeah Woods. 'She brings a lot of energy to the court and she'll give us a spark defensively - she's quick and has a knack for anticipating passes. Stephisha's defense will lead to some easy scores on the offensive end.'

Houston will come to Oregon State after finishing her prep career at Artesia High School. The first team All-Moore League performer competed for Millikan High School before transferring to Artesia for her senior season. Houston helped lead Millikan to the semifinals of the 2004 Division 1AA CIF Southern Section championship, and along with being ranked nationally in Michael White's scouting directory, she was recently named an honorable mention preseason Street and Smith All-American.

'Barbara has the ability to be both a power player in the post as well as a finesse player,' said Woods. 'She's a fierce rebounder who reads the ball well and finds a way to go up and get it. Offensively, she's able to square-up, face the basket, and hit the short pull-up.'

Oregon State expects to receive two more letters of intent for the early signing period.
