WSU Men's Basketball Downs Lewis-Clark State

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Senior Jeff Varem notched a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead Washington State to a 62-53 men's basketball victory over Lewis-Clark State, Wednesday night.

The game was an exhibition for the Cougars while the NAIA Warriors count the game as regular season and fell to 4-2 in their season.

Varem, a native of Benue, Nigeria, scored nine points in the first half as WSU built a 26-23 halftime advantage. Freshman Robbie Cowgill (Austin, Texas) scored four points to key an 8-2 run that opened the second half and increased the WSU lead to 34-25.

From there, the Warriors never got closer than six points, the last time coming at 42-36 with 11:11 remaining. The Cougars held a 38-26 advantage on the boards, but committed 23 turnovers.

Cowgill, along with fellow freshmen Kyle Weaver (Beloit, Wis.), Josh Akognon (Petaluma, Calif.) and Daven Harmeling (Grand Junction, Colo.) combined for 26 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.

The Cougars open their regular season at 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 19 against Montana State.
