Nov. 13, 2004

BERKELEY - No. 7 California came away with a 3-2, double overtime victory against Stanford, thanks to a goal from sophomore midfielder Eric Ebert in the 103 minute of play. The win closes out the regular season for the Bears, with their record improving to 12-3-3, 4-3-1 Pac-10. Stanford falls to 7-6-2, 2-4-2 Pac-10.

Junior forward Calen Carr, who led the team with seven shots (six on goal), broke away from the Stanford defense inside their 18-yard box in the second overtime period. Carr found Ebert four-yards out, who calmly slotted home the game-winner at the 102:29 mark. The goal was Ebert's fourth of the year, and his third game-winner.

The Bears opened scoring in the first half in the 26th minute. Junior Tyson Wahl laid off a free kick to junior midfielder Nick Hatzke, whose 30-yard shot found the back of the net. The assist was Wahl's second of the season. Hatzke, who leads the team in goals, assists (seven) and points (19), tallied his sixth goal of the season.

After being out-shot by Cal 13-2 in the first half, Stanford came out aggressively after the break, tying the game six minutes into the half. Senior Darren Fernandez headed in Matt Janusz' corner kick from 6-yards out. Stanford would take the lead late in the half, when sophomore Galen Thompson scored on a curving 18-yard shot.

Carr found himself free of the Stanford defense once again in the 89th minute, when his 6-yard shot deflected off the goal post. After two more Cal attempts were cleared off the goal line, senior Yohei Fukuda knocked in his third goal of the season to send the Bears into overtime.

Cal out-shot Stanford 22-6 in the match, with Stanford's keeper Robby Fulton coming up with four saves, the Bears' Eric Kronberg finished with one. The physical match ended with Stanford being called for 19 fouls to Cal's eight.

With regular season play done, the Bears now wait for the NCAA to announce the field for the 2004 NCAA men's soccer tournament. ESPNEWS will be broadcasting the selection, live, Monday, Nov. 15 at 4 p.m.
