SEATTLE - Jamie Broback scored 28 points and Kelly Roysland added 16 as 14th-ranked Minnesota opened its 2004-05 season with a 77-69 win over UNLV in the first round of the WBCA BTI Classic in Seattle.
Host Washington plays South Carolina in the tourney's second game at 3 p.m.
UNLV's Sheena Moore accounted for nearly half of the Runnin' Rebels 69 points, pouring in 34 to lead the upset bid. Moore pulled UNLV (0-1, 0-0) to within one point of Minnesota, at 49-48, with 12:38 remaining, before an 11-2 Minnesota run put the game out of UNLV's reach.
The game was the first for Minnesota (1-0, 0-0) since losing in the 2004 Final Four to eventual national champion UConn, by a 67-58 margin.
Both teams will return for second-round action Monday, with UNLV facing South Carolina at 5 p.m., and Minnesota matching up with host Washington at 7 p.m.
