Washington-South Carolina Postgame Quotes
Nov. 14, 2004
HEAD COACH June Daugherty
General Comments: 'I was impressed with South Carolina. They're tough, they're tall, they come from the SEC, and they have a lot of depth. I thought we showed a lot of poise tonight, especially when we went down early. You have to understand that some nights; the shots are not going to fall, that's basketball. You have to keep grinding away and we did that with our defense, and I thought we had tremendous support off the bench. So many players made things happen and got us into runs and got us back in it. That's what we're about, we're a team, we're going to play you for 40 (minutes), we're going to full-court as much as we can and make things happen. I think we were fortunate to be able to wear them down a little bit in the second half.'
On poor shooting: 'That's going to happen. We try to remind our team that that's going to happen, but stick to the offensive boards and get second shots for our teammates. When we do that, we get to the line, and we keep our intensity up. In the second half we shot a little bit better, started moving the ball a little bit more, and got into what makes us good as a motion offensive team.'
On adjustments at halftime: 'We started trying to run some more back pick sets, so we could back down to the low block. I thought when we did that we settled into our offense and the kickouts were going and in a good offensive flow. I think it helped us getting our bigs inside because it gave us some flow offensively.'
On shooting threes: 'We're going to take what defenses give us. South Carolina has a pretty good defense. They have a lot of big kids and mix it up. Sometimes they had a 6-foot-5 kid on our point guard that was an unbelievable matchup for Emily Florence. Sometimes if you don't have it inside, you can kick it out and find a teammate outside.'
On Kayla Burt: 'She shows a lot of inspiration and a lot of courage. I know I look up to her and everyone in this program does and it sure seemed like the fans were excited too. It's really great to see her out there.'
FORWARD Kristen O'Neill
On first half struggles: 'It's frustrating when you're not hitting your shots, but we crashed the boards and it's all about playing hard. We went out and gave it our all and it led to more opportunities in the second half. We're young, but it was encouraging to see how we can go out there and handle our first real competition of the season.'
On Kayla Burt: 'It's truly amazing to have her out on the court. She has a lot of heart and a lot of pride. It's great to see her out there with everything that she has gone through. Our theme for this year is a new beginning for this team and she is a huge part of that.'
FORWARD Breanne Watson
On poor shooting: 'We kept playing hard and we gutted it out on defense and that's what kept us in the game. We kept crashing the offensive boards and then gained momentum with steals on defense.'
On taking control: 'I struggled the first half and at halftime I said, 'forget about it, just go in and play hard'. That's basically what I did. I crashed the boards and got fouled by their big girls, so I was able to get some points by going to the free throw line.'
GUARD Dominique Banks
On playing first D-I game: 'It's very intense. I like it a lot, it's the next level and I felt that we were all ready for it. I like it a lot.'
