Cal Men's Golf Loses to UCLA at the Collegiate Match Play Championship

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FL - The No. 15-seeded Cal men's golf team was eliminated by No. 10-seeded UCLA, 3-1-1, Monday in the consolation round of the the 2004 Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship, held Nov. 14-16 at Mission Inn Resort at Howey-in-the Hills, Fla. True freshman Michael Jensen was the lone winner for the Golden Bears on Monday, defeating the Bruins' John Poucher, 3 and 2. Junior Fredrik Svanberg finished even with UCLA's Peter Campbell. On Sunday, the Bears had lost to No. 2-seeded Oklahoma State, 3-2-0.

The winning players for the Bears against Oklahoma State on Sunday were redshirt freshman Kyle Dowden and senior Jeff Hood. Dowden defeated Oklahoma State's Zack Robinson, 4 and 3; while Hood upended the Cowboy's Alex Noren, 2 and 1.

The Collegiate Match Play Championship concluded the 2004 fall competition for the Cal men's golf team. The Bears' top finish in the fall was placing third at Alister MacKenzie Invitational, hosted by Cal, at The Meadow Club near Fairfax, Oct. 11-12. The Bears will next compete as a team at the Ping/Arizona Intercollegiate, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, 2005 at the Arizona National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.
