Nov. 15, 2004

Oregon State University men's golf head coach Brian Watts announced Friday the signing of Tyler Simpson of Portland and Alex Williams of Vancouver, Wash.

Simpson, hailing from Clackamas High School, qualified for the Oregon 4A High School Golf Championships in 2002 and 2004 and was a 2004 First Team All-State Selection. His accomplishments include earning third place at the 2004 State Championships with a 1-under 143 and taking individual medalist honors at the Central Oregon Junior Championship after firing an 8-under 137.

'Tyler is coming off a good year and is a natural three-sport athlete who has unlimited potential,' said Watts. 'Tyler has a great attitude towards golf and life. Once his focus is solely on golf, he is going to become a great player.'

Williams is an experienced player from Skyview High School in Vancouver, Wash. who won the 2004 Washington High School District Championships with a 12-under 132. He has had success on the junior circuit as well, winning the Oregon Junior Match Play Championships and finishing third at the Boys' Junior America Cup Matches in 2003, where he led Team Washington to the victory.

'Alex will bring a lot of experience and maturity to our program,' said Watts. 'With the success Alex has had thus far, we expect him to have an immediate impact in the line-up. He plays a very controlled game and makes very few mental mistakes. 'Williams also competed at the 2004 American Junior Golf Association Tournament of Champions after posting four top five finishes and five top ten finishes over the past year.

'I look forward to working with both Tyler and Alex over the next several years as their passion and love for the game will be welcomed by the coaching staff and future teammates,' said an enthusiastic Watts.
