Women's Basketball Inks Mercedes Fox-Griffin

Nov. 16, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University head women's basketball coach Judy Spoelstra announced on Tuesday that Mercedes Fox-Griffin, a guard from La Jolla, CA, has signed a national letter of intent to play for OSU during the 2005-06 campaign.

'Mercedes is an explosive and dynamic athlete,' said Spoelstra. 'She adds quickness and is a very good ball handler who sees the floor well.'

Fox-Griffin will join the Beaver squad for the 2005-06 season after graduating from La Jolla Country Day High School, where she helped lead the team to back-to-back runner-up finishes at the CIF Division IV Championship. La Jolla Country Day won the Division IV title in 2002 and has won three straight Coastal South League championships. Fox-Griffin is a first team All-Coast South League selection and a first team All-San Diego Section CIF performer.

'Mercedes comes from a very good program at La Jolla Country Day and can play both the point as well as the two-guard position,' said OSU assistant coach and director of recruiting, Jualeah Woods. 'She penetrates well and is able to break down the defense. We're looking for her to be a scoring point guard for us, but at the same time, direct traffic and help us get into the flow offensively.'

Fox-Griffin joins Stephisha Walton (Vallejo, CA) and Barbara Houston (Compton, CA) as early signing period additions for the Beavers.

The three signees will help fill the departure of current seniors Shannon Howell and Jessica Mellinger.

'We're very excited about this class,' said Woods. 'They're a very balanced class, having the 1,2, and 4 positions covered. All three are hard workers who should be able to contribute right away.'

Oregon State has two scholarships still available.
