Nov. 18, 2004

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Seniors Clare Rustad and Cassie Giles from Washington's Sweet 16 women's soccer team were first-team selections on the 2004 Academic All-Pac-10 team, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Thursday.

Rustad, a defender from Saltspring Island, B.C., maintains a 3.98 grade point average in a biology curriculum. She is a member of UW's Dean's List and is a Rhode's Scholar candidate. Rustad was honored Nov. 4 as a first-team member of the Academic All-District VIII team and is in the running for academic All-America honors.

An international studies major from Portland, Ore., Giles has a 3.83 GPA. She was also named to the conference's first-team academic squad in 2003.

Senior midfielder Nikki Gamble was named to the Pac-10's second academic team. The Oak Harbor (Wash.) High School product, with a 3.62 GPA in business administration, ranks second on the team with 10 goals.

Three Huskies received honorable mention academic honors from the Pac-10, including junior Kim Taylor (Woodland Hills, Calif.), senior Kelli Smith (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and senior Tina Frimpong (Vancouver, Wash./Hudson's Bay), who last week became the first person to receive the Pac-10 Player of the Year award twice.

The Huskies (16-4-1) won two NCAA Tournament games last weekend and host Maryland (9-6-4) in a third-round contest on Friday, Nov. 20. Kick-off is 5 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field.
