Cardinal Men Win 2004 UCI/Speedo Cup

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford men's swimming team won the 2004 UCI/Speedo Cup in Long Beach, Calif. today with a final score of 1,595. UC San Diego took second with 1,049.5 points. Cardinal sophomore Hongzhe Sun was honored as Swimmer of the Meet.

Stanford started strong in the opening event on day three - the 1,650 freestyle. Cardinal Shaun Phillips took top honors, clocking in at 15.14.57. Teammate Andy Grant placed third in 15:30.17, followed by Mike McLean who finished fourth (15:42.37). Freshman Noa Sakamoto also garnered a top-10 finish, taking seventh in a time of 16:09.23.

The Cardinal finished 1-2-3 in the 200 backstroke as sophomore swimmer Hongzhe Sun led the field with his time of 1:43.44. Senior Jayme Cramer was second, touching the wall in 1:45.52 while teammate Tobias Oriwol was third (1:47.98). In the men's 100 freestyle finals, Stanford finished 1-2 with Ben Wildman-Tobriner touching in 44.72 just ahead of teammate Kyle Ransom (45.25). Matt Crowe placed sixth (46.08) and freshman Danny Beal was seventh (46.16).

Once again the Cardinal took the top three spots as senior Gary Marshall won the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:01.90. Nick Wolfe was second (2:02.35) while Mark Stephens placed third (2:02.68). Thomas Brown finished eighth for Stanford, touching in the wall in 2:07.49.

Matt McDonald and Jayme Cramer recorded the top times in the men's 200 butterfly clocking in at 1:48.15 and 1:48.57 respectively. Stanford did not compete in the 400 freestyle relay which was the final event of the meet.
