Men's Golf Signs Three In Fall Signing Period

Nov. 24, 2004

The Arizona State men's golf program has inked three student-athletes in the fall signing period, head coach Randy Lein has announced. Steele DeWald (Winter Sports School/Park City, Utah) and two players from Scottsdale, Ariz., as Erik Coover (Desert Mountain H.S.) and Ryan Kelley (Saint Mary's H.S.) are scheduled to join the program in fall of 2005.

Kelley won the 2004 Arizona Boys State Championship and also won the 2003 and 2004 Arizona Boys Match Play Championship. He was also the 2003 National PGA Junior Series Player of the Year (age 13-15).

Coover has been ranked in the top 100 of both major national junior rankings. He represented Arizona on the 2003 Jr. America's Cup Team and was an Arizona All-State pick in 2002.

DeWald finished sixth in this year's Utah State Amatuer. His low score is a 64 at The Raven Golf Club last December in winning a junior event. He also finished third in the Downhill at the 1999 Junior Olympics at the age of 13.

'This can be one of ASU's best freshman classes,' notes Lein, who is entering his 13th season at the school and has coached the team to six Pac-10 championships, one NCAA title and nine NCAA top-10 finishes. 'These three young men all have an abundance of natural ability and a work ethic which will guarantee them success. They all have had success at the junior level and I believe all have the ingredients to become All-Americans as Sun Devils. They are serious about playing professionally and are very excited about joining our Sun Devil family next August.'

Lein has had success with freshman, as in 2003 Sun Devil Alejandro Canizares became just the sixth freshman to win the NCAA title. Lein has coached 12 different All-Americans at ASU on 27 occasions.
