UW-Alabama Twice as Nice
Nov. 27, 2004
SEATTLE - That wasn't a misprint in your Saturday newspaper - Washington will indeed play Alabama on Saturday at both 3 p.m. in Seattle, and at 7 p.m. in Anchorage, Alaska.
For just the fourth time in the last 27 years, the Huskies' men's and women's programs will each face the same non-conference opponent on the same day, with the Washington women battling Alabama in the championship game of the Seattle Times Husky Classic, and the UW men tangling with the Crimson Tide in final-round action at the Great Alaska Shootout.
While non-conference doubleheaders were commonplace before 1977 - most frequently between the Huskies and area programs such as Seattle University or Seattle Pacific - a similar double has occurred on just three occasions since.
The Seattle Times Classic has played a role in each of the two most recent doubles, including Saturday and a Nov. 24, 2001 tripleheader at Bank of America Arena which saw championship-round action in the Classic between Washington and Santa Clara followed by a men's non-conference game between the same two teams.
Interestingly, in each of the three doubles since 1977 - and through at least the Husky women's game Saturday, a 76-56 loss to Alabama -- Washington's men have been a winner, while the UW women have suffered a defeat.
