Nov. 27, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State wrapped up its volleyball season by beating Portland 30-25, 30-24, 30-23 on Saturday night to win the championship of the OSU Showcase tournament at Gill Coliseum. Seniors Amanda Eggert and Allison Lawrence, playing their final match for the Beavers (12-16 overall), were two keys to the victory over the Pilots (12-17).

'What a great way to end the season,' OSU coach Nancy Somera said. 'I was so thrilled for Amanda that with her bad shoulder, she could get in there tonight and help us win the first two games on her senior night. And the way the match ended with Allison putting away the last two kills of the game; that's a nice way for it to end for her as well.'

Oregon took third place in the tournament, beating Portland State 30-28, 30-21, 30-25. It was also the season-finale for the Ducks (10-19) and Vikings (14-17).

Katelyn Healy had 10 kills to lead OSU and also had three service aces. Desma Stoval hit .412, coming up with eight kills and just one error on 17 attacks, while Kristin Murray hit .353 with eight kills and two errors on 17 attacks.

'I thought Portland was a great, scrappy team and kept up the pressure,' Somera said. 'Although statistically they outdug us, I thought our defense matched them. It was a good match and a nice way to end the season.'

The Pilots came up with 51 digs to OSU's 38, but the Beavers' team hitting percentage rose steadily through the match from .190 in the first game to .245 in the second game to .333 in the third.

OSU trailed 17-15 in the first game before scoring three straight points. After Portland tied the game at 18-18, the Beavers took the lead for good at 19-18.

In the second game, Oregon State broke out of a 7-7 tie with five straight points and Portland never got closer than four the rest of the way. The final game was tied at 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 until the Beavers came up with three consecutive points and the Pilots couldn't get closer than two from then on.
