Nov. 29, 2004
TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State libero Sydney Donahue and middle blocker Colette Meek were named to the 2004 All-Pac-10 Freshman Volleyball Team, announced Monday by conference commissioner Tom Hansen. Setter Rachel Mittelstaedt earned All-Pac-10 Freshman honorable mention honors.
ASU filled two of the seven slots on the All-Freshman team and for the first time in school history placed a pair of players on the annual all-rookie team. Meek and Donahue become the first Sun Devils to earn All-Pac-10 Freshman honors since setter Cheryl Anglin in 2000.
Donahue (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) set the Arizona State single-match and single-season freshman records while anchoring the Sun Devil defense. She led the team and all Pac-10 freshman averaging 4.36 digs per game. Her 375 digs broke the ASU freshman record (previously 358 set by Jami Coughlin in 1998) and ranks 13th in the ASU single-season record books. She tallied 10 or more digs in 19 matches, including five matches with 20 or more digs. She set the single-match freshman record with 30 kills in a four-game loss to Oregon State (11/4).
Meek (Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada) became ASU's most prolific freshman middle blocker in school history, averaging 2.27 kills while hitting at a .296 clip. She broke the ASU freshman record for blocks per game with 1.20 and became the first Sun Devil to average over a block a game since 1998 (Shawna Vanley).
Mittelstaedt (Phoenix, Ariz.) earned honorable mention honors after starting 25 of ASU's 27 matches. She ranked seventh in the Pac-10 averaging 10.59 assists per game and also ranked third on the team averaging 0.87 blocks per game.
The Sun Devils (10-17, 5-13 Pac-10) return all but one player that saw action on the court this season for the 2005 season.
