Volleyball Opens NCAA Play at Pauley on Friday

UCLA will participate in its 23rd NCAA Tournament this weekend, playing host to a first and second round site for the second consecutive year. The Bruins will open against Loyola Marymount at 8 pm on Friday night, while Utah and Long Beach State will open the evening's action with a 5:30 pm start in Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins lost in five games at Utah in mid-September. UCLA has not faced LMU since the 1990 season, and the Bruins and 49ers have not faced each other since a 3-0 UCLA win in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament at Pepperdine.

Bruins Split Final Weekend; Zartman Sets New Record
Senior libero Chrissie Zartman continued her record setting season in UCLA's final match of the regular season as she recorded a school record 32 digs in UCLA's four-game loss to Washington. Zartman now holds the school record for digs in a five-game (36 vs. USC, 11/12) and four-game match. Although the Bruins fell to the third-ranked Huskies on Saturday night, UCLA did earn a three-game sweep of Washington State on Friday to finish tied for fourth in the final Pac-10 standings.

Zartman Named First-Team All-Pac-10; Four Named HM
UCLA placed one player on the All-Pac-10 first team and four on the Pac-10 Honorable Mention team, it was announced on Monday. Senior libero Chrissie Zartman earned first-team notice for a third consecutive season, while teammates Becky Green, Krystal McFarland, Nana Meriwether and Brynn Murphy were named to the Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 team.

UCLA vs. Loyola Marymount (17-11)The Bruins and the Lions have not met on the volleyball court since a 15-11, 15-10, 15-9 UCLA victory on Sept. 26, 1990. UCLA leads the all-time series by a 6-1 margin. LMU is coached by Steve Stratos, who is in his 15th season with the Lions. Stat Leaders: KILLS- Kelli Nerison (305 kills, 3.05/game); ASSISTS- Nicole Oehlman (1202, 12.27/game); ACES- Heather Hughes (41, 0.43/game); DIGS- Michelle Look (338, 3.80/game); BLOCKS- Kelli Nerison (172, 1.72/game).

UCLA vs. Long Beach State (23-6)
UCLA has not faced The Beach since a first-round NCAA Tournament match-up in the 2002 NCAA Tournament. The Bruins won that match in three games, and UCLA leads the all-time series by a 53-18 margin. Long Beach State is coached by Brian Gimmillaro, who is in his 20th season at The Beach. Stat Leaders: KILLS- Alexis Crimes (407kills, 3.91/game); ASSISTS- Jillian Mazzarella (1342, 12.90/game); ACES- Jillian Mazzarella (34, 0.33/game); DIGS- Heather Laudato (508, 4.88/game); BLOCKS- Alexis Crimes (136, 1.31/game).

UCLA vs. Utah (24-6)
The Bruins last faced the Utes on Sept. 17 in Salt Lake City, with Utah taking a five-game victory and earning their first-ever victory in the all-time series. UCLA leads that series 6-1. The Utes are coached by Beth Launiere, who is in her 15th year at Utah. Stat Leaders: KILLS- Lyndsey Henderson (391 kills, 3.65/game); ASSISTS- Tracy Neumeier (708, 6.56/game); ACES- Tracy Neumeier (35, 0.32/game); DIGS- Connie Dangerfield (458, 4.20/game); BLOCKS- Lyndsey Henderson (179, 1.67/game).
