Freshman Suzi Babos Ranked No.1 in the Northwest

Berkeley - Freshman Suzi Babos was ranked No. 1 in the Northwest region in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Nov. 30. Babos is joined by sophomore Monica Wiesener, No. 15, and freshman Cristina Visico, No. 17, in the top 30.

Babos' collegiate career is off to a sensational start, having amassed a fall singles record of 15-1. Babos captured the Nike Cal Invitation singles crown as well as winning the ITA Northwest Regional Championships and finishing second in singles at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. Her seven previous wins have all come against nationally ranked players, including No. 1 Cristelle Grier of Northwestern, No. 2 Megan Bradley of University of Miami and No. 4 Julie Coin of Clemson.

Wiesener has a 4-4 singles record through fall action. The Calabasas, Calif. native advanced to the quarterfinals of the Nike Cal Invitational before falling to fellow Golden Bear Babos, as well as the Round of 32 at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships.

Freshman Cristina Visico has also been impressive in her debut season for the Bears. Her 6-3 singles record has included an appearance in the Round of 32 at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, as well as an upset victory over Michigan's No. 57 Elizabeth Exon in the Thunderbird Invitational.

The Bears resume play on January 14, where they will be competing at the Pac-10 Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash., and the UNLV Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev.
