Cal moves up to fourth at Texas Invite

AUSTIN, Texas - A pair of fifth-place finishes helped to boost No. 4-ranked California into fourth place on the second day of the Texas Invitational held Friday at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center. The Golden Bears, who were fifth after day one of the meet on Thursday, have 338.50 points, just half a point behind third-place USC. The host Longhorns (518.50) and Arizona (447) are currently 1-2 in the standings.

The Cal B team of freshman Jernej Godec, junior Henrique Barbosa, sophomore Jonas Tilly and sophomore Rolandas Gimbutis was fifth in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:30.15. Cal sophomore Graham Lentz and Barbosa each swam NCAA B qualifying times in the 100 breaststroke, as Lentz was fifth (55:33) and Barbosa was seventh (55.46).

Lentz also swam the second leg on the Cal A team that took seventh (1:33.19) in the 200 medley relay. Junior Chris Gibson led off the Cal A relay, followed by Lentz, freshman Dominic Cathey and junior Matt Lyon.

Bears freshman Louis Vayo was sixth in the 400 individual medley in an NCAA B qualifying time of 3:53.60, while junior teammate Miguel Molina took eighth (3:55.91) in the 400 IM. Cal freshman Jernej Godec was seventh (49.61) in the 100 backstroke.

In the final event of the day, the 800 free relay, the Cal A and B teams placed sixth (6:38.59) and seventh (6:39.00), respectively. Swimming on the A team were Gimbutis, senior Steve Rehrmann, freshman John Foster and freshman Garrett Wagner. Vayo, senior John Dorr, Molina and Godec swam on the B team.

Day three of the Texas Invitational starts tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 4, with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. CST and finals starting at 6 p.m. CST.

Also on Friday in Athens, Ga., Cal diver Louie Gagnet finished fourth with 289 points in one-meter diving on the first day of the Georgia Invitational. Gagnet, a senior, had placed third (304.10 points) in the preliminaries on Friday morning. The Cal women's swimming and diving team is also competing at the Georgia Invitational. Day two of the three-day event is tomorrow.
