Womens' Swimming and Diving Finishes Fourth, Men's Team Seventh at Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas - The Arizona State University swimming and diving teams concluded competition Saturday at the Texas Invitational at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center with the women finishing in fourth-place while the men came in seventh. The men finished just one point shy of sixth-place. The women recorded 12 NCAA consideration times on the day, while the men notched five.
Sarah A Fischer and Kathryn Hennessy started off the evening for the Sun Devil women in the 1650 freestyle event finishing in the second and third positions, respectively. Fischer touched the wall with an NCAA consideration time of 16:31.52 that puts her ninth on ASU's all time top ten. Hennessy came in close behind, nothing an NCAA consideration time of 16:33.42. Amanda Gillespie followed up with a season-best (2:03.17) in the B-final of the 200 backstroke.
The 100 freestyle event saw the most action from the Sun Devil women. Szigeti led the way, finishing seventh with a NCAA consideration time of 50.11. Her preliminary time of 50.05 is a season-best. Swimming in the B-final of the 100 freestyle, Sandra Steffensen and Sally Brown each notched NCAA consideration times finishing seventh (51.07) and eighth (51.13, respectively. The C-final saw four Sun Devils, with Caitlin Andrew grabbing the third slot with a season-best and NCAA consideration time of 50.79. Laura Ullrich followed in fourth-place with a personal-best and NCAA consideration time of 51.10. Lindsey Brown and Abra Armour also competed in the C-final, finishing seventh (51.42) and eighth (51.56), respectively.
Christine Creek swam a NCAA consideration time of 2:15.67 in the 200 breaststroke final finishing fifth overall. Her time puts her seventh on ASU's all time top ten. Heidi Schmidt touched the wall next in the 200 breaststroke, finishing in sixth-place with a NCAA consideration time of 2:16.89.
The 200 butterfly saw more success from the Sun Devil women as Ellis Schieman swam a personal-best 2:01.02 to take fifth-place honors. Her time is good for a NCAA consideration time and moves the freshman into the eighth spot on ASU's all time top ten. Jill Kripps was in action in the B-final of the 200 butterfly finishing sixth (2:04.40). Her preliminary time of 2:03.08 is a personal best in that event.
The 400 freestyle relay rounded out the invitational for the women in the pool with two teams notching NCAA consideration times. The relay team of Szigeti, Andrew, Steffensen and Ullrich placed fifth overall with a time of 3:21.12 placing them third on ASU's all time top ten. Finishing in ninth was the ASU team of L.Brown, Armour, Kripps and S. Brown with a time of 3:24.53.
In the diving pool the women saw action on the platform for the first time this season. Trisha Tumlinson finished second in the event with a personal best score of 471.80. Cassidy Farwell had a personal best performance, placing fourth overall with a score of 343.20.
The final day of competition for the men included five NCAA consideration times. Lucas Azevedo started the evening in the 1650 freestyle, finishing eighth overall with a NCAA consideration time of 15:20.26. In the 200 backstroke event, the men saw action from Bobby Crowder and Evan Rahaeuser in the C-final with Crowder taking fourth-place honors (1:49.02) and Rahaeuser finishing fifth (1:49.50).
Jeff Barrett swam a personal best in the 100 freestyle event, recording a NCAA consideration time of 44.33 to finish eighth overall. David Kolozar, who is second on ASU's all time top ten list in the 200 butterfly, swam a season best and NCAA consideration time of 1:47.50 to take fifth-place in the 200 fly event.
The 200 breaststroke event saw the most action for the men with Leo Martins finishing in eighth-place overall with a NCAA consideration time of 2:00.37. Joey Clements claimed first-place honors in the B-final in the 200 breaststroke (2:00.66) while Emerson Ward taking eighth. Clements time is good for a NCAA consideration time.
Concluding the evening for the men was the 400 freestyle relay event which saw the team of Barrett, Pat Fleming, R. Crowder and B.Crowder take eighth-place with a time of 3:01.54. Finishing in 11th overall for the Sun Devils was the relay team of Rahaeuser, Azevedo, Kolozar and Tom Hickman.
Thomas McCrummen rounded out his exceptional weekend with a fifth-place finish in the platform event (364.50). Brant Bingham set a personal best, finishing eighth overall with a score of 305.05. McCrummen claimed first-place in the 3-meter springboard event Friday and second in the 1-meter Thursday.
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams are next in action after the new year as both teams take on Wyoming Janruary, 7at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. They will follow up with another meet on January 8 as the women take on Oregon State and the men battle against the University of British Columbia.
