New Television Technology to be Unveiled at the Insight Bowl

Dec. 27, 2004

ESPN, in conjunction with Sportvision, will debut 'Kick Track,' an innovation that will accurately depict by how much a football place kicker makes or misses a field goal or extra point attempt. The on-screen graphic, similar to ESPN's 'K Zone' for Major League Baseball telecasts, will appear in selected replays and signify the exact point the football crosses through or outside the plane of the goal posts.

The exclusive system will be utilized during the network's coverage of the Insight Bowl pitting Notre Dame against Oregon State (Tuesday, Dec. 28 at 9:45 p.m. ET on ESPN) and Pacific Life Holiday Bowl featuring #21 Texas Tech against #4 California (Thursday, Dec. 30 at 8 p.m. on ESPN).

'ESPN Kick Track' The 'Kick Track' system will provide viewers with the first precise graphic presentation of the football crossing the plane of the goal posts.

 A circle and intersecting horizontal and vertical lines will appear around the football at the exact point it crosses between or outside the goal posts.

 Cameras positioned in each end zone computer-register the tops of the goal posts and the corners of the cross bar, showcasing the point where the ball crosses through or outside the goal posts.

 The system will be used only for replays and will provide an angle from the high end zone cameras.

ESPN's 'Kick Track' follows 'Pass Track' technology which was introduced during the network's Sunday Night Football on November 21. Using data collected from several computers, 'Pass Track' provides a three-dimensional representation of the speed, timing and distance of the football thrown from a quarterback to his receiver. The graphic is overlaid on video images shot from SkyCam and shown in replays to demonstrate the elements critical for successful completion.

'Similar to the recently unveiled `Pass Track' technology on Sunday Night Football, the `Kick Track' on-screen graphic innovation will offer further insight into an important aspect of the game,' said Jed Drake, ESPN senior vice president, remote production. 'Whether it is a difficult-to-gauge hash-mark angle, a close call or a high kick that extends above the goal posts, `Kick Track' will enhance the viewing experience for fans.'
