Men's Hoops Host Valparaiso in Holiday Tournament Final

Dec. 29, 2004

ASU VS. VALPO: The Arizona State Sun Devils (10-1) will try and extend their win streak to nine games when they host the Valparaiso Crusaders (3-6) Wednesday at 7 p.m. MST at Wells Fargo Arena/Ned Wulk Court in the championship game of the ASU Holiday Classic. ASU will try and go 11-1 for just the third time in school history, as the 1974-75 and 1962-63 teams both went 15-1. ASU is 8-0 at home after going 7-8 last year in Tempe and has already matched last year's overall win total. ASU topped Long Island 92-63 Tuesday, jumping out to a 49-22 halftime lead, the most first-half points since it led USC 58-30 on Feb. 13, 2003 (past 37 games). ASU also matched its best assist total in Rob Evans seven years at ASU with 29, matching the Feb. 17, 2000, game against UCLA. Sophomore swingman Bryson Krueger is out for tonight's game with a sprained ankle, as it will mark the first time this year ASU will change starting lineups. ASU used 13 starting lineups last year, but just five in 2002-03 when it went 20-12 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. ASU has won 27 of its 37 holiday tournaments (11 of the past 15), is 62-13 overall and 11-2 under Rob Evans.

IKE UPDATE: Ike Diogu is averaging 22.6 points and 11.3 boards in ASU's eight-game win streak and has posted five double-doubles on the season...has seven 20-point games and has scored in double-digits in all 70 career games. He entered play this week ranked first nationally in free throws made and attempted, fourth in free throw percentage, fifth in scoring and tied for tenth in rebounding.

QUICK NOTES: Serge Angounou is averaging 10.0 points and 6.8 boards in ASU's seven-game win streak. He had a career-high four blocks vs. LIU after posting just two blocks all of last season...ASU has won 24 straight games when it shoots 50 percent from the field...Kevin Kruger had a career-high seven assists vs. Long Island...ASU had season highs in points (92), field goals made (35) and attempted (65), assists (29), first-half points (49) and bench points (42)...Jason Braxton has 45 assists and just 16 turnovers on the year...ASU has outrebounded nine of its 10 opponents on the year...the Sun Devils eight-game win streak is the best since the 1980-81 team won 11 straight...ASU has 23 blocks in its past three games. It posted nine vs. Northwestern, eight vs. Santa Clara and six vs. Valparaiso...ASU has held seven opponents to under 40 percent field goal shooting...ASU has led at the half in all but one game (32-27 vs. Cal State Northridge)...ASU is 34-of-74 (.459) in its past four games from the three-point stripe. It hit 13 three-pointers vs. Northwestern on Dec. 20, its most since 1996.

45 TO GO: Ike Diogu's national-best double-figure scoring streak of 70 games still has a ways to go until it reaches NCAA-record levels. The NCAA record is 115 set by La Salle's Lionel Simmons from 1987-90. Diogu's lowest point total in his career was 10 against Morehead State on Nov. 22, 2003, the first game of his career. Diogu has been held to less than 15 points just nine times in that span.
