Gentry Wins at Midlands
Dec. 30, 2004
Evanston, Ill. - Matt Gentry simply cannot be stopped. The defending national champion swept through the 157 pound bracket at the Midlands tournament to take the crown, already his third individual title of the season. His school-record win streak stands at 57, dating back to March of 2003.
Wrestling fans saw the match-up they wanted in the finals, as one-seed Gentry took on two-seed Alex Tirapelle of Illinois. Gentry wrestled to a strong 5-1 decision to take the title. To reach the finals, Gentry secured decisions against three other opponents on the day, giving him a total of six victories at the tournament. His closest call came against Jeremiah Jarvis who wrestled for the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club. Gentry escaped with a narrow 9-8 decision over the UC Davis graduate, a Pac-10 opponent he had beaten twice last season. The Cardinal wrestler also recorded decisions over Paul Bjorlo of Virginia (11-4) and Trent Paulson of Iowa State (5-1).
The only other Cardinal to record wins at the Midlands were Tanner Gardner (125), who wrestled unattached in his redshirt season, and Ray Blake (149). Gardner's opening loss sent him to the consolation bracket, where he notched a 4-2 win over Penn's Mike Silengo and a 3-2 win over Iowa's Charlie Falk. Gardner then lost to Luke Smith of Central Michigan in another close match, this time coming out on the wrong end of a 4-2 decision. Blake beat Emmanuel Brooks of Lincoln 5-4, but had to forfeit to Rider's Mike Palma due to injury.
Notes: Stanford finished in 16th place with 26 team points in a 50-team field ... The University of Illinois won the tournament for the second year in a row with 130.5 team points ... The Cardinal's next action is at the Lone Star Duals on January 8, when Stanford will face Michigan, Air Force, and Harvard in a series of duals in Grand Prairie, Texas.
