Gymnasts Open 2005 Season Friday At The Maui Invitational

This Week --Arizona State University will open its 30th season of gymnastics this Friday, January 7 at the Maui Invitational. Competing against ASU will be Maryland, Boise State and Alsaka-Anchorage. The Sun Devils are coached by veteran coach John Spini, who is beginning his 25th season at ASU. He is ASU's longest-tenured head coach, tying former men's basketball coach Ned Wulk (25) and men's gymnastics coach Don Robinson (25) for third on the all-time Sun Devil list. The Sun Devils feature one senior in Mesa, Arizona product Kari Muth, defending national balance beam champion Ashley Kelly (Jr., York, Pa.) and junior Lauren Powell (Feeding Hills, Mass.).
ASU In The Rankings --ASU debuted at No. 9 in the GymInfo rankings, based on the preseason coaches poll released Jan. 3. Pac-10 Conference foe UCLA was selected to win the NCAA crown with 608 votes and 15 first-place bids. ASU received 387 votes and is neighbored in the standings by No. 3 Stanford (554), No. 12 Oregon State (280) and No. 13 Arizona (264). ASU Faces Nation's Finest --Arizona State will face eight of the nation's top 25 teams in 2005, according to the preseason coaches poll. Of the squads the Sun Devils will meet in 2005, UCLA is No. 1, Stanford is No. 3, Utah is No. 5, Oregon State is No. 12, Arizona is No. 13, Penn State is No. 19, Washington is No. 21 and California is No. 25. Four of those meetings are at home in Wells Fargo Arena.
Spini To Notch 300th Career Victory --25th-year head coach John Spini will most likely notch his 300th career victory at this week's Maui Invitational Friday. ASU faces Maryland, Boise State and Alaska-Anchorage and a win over just one of them will be his 300th. Spini enters the 2005 campaign with 299 career wins. His regular-season record is 299-109-2 over 24 seasons. His home won-loss mark is 160-22-1.
Last Year --Placed 9th at the NCAA Championships in Los Angeles, Calif.
