Women Beat Oregon State, 62-51, In Pre-Orange Bowl Match-Up

LOS ANGELES - With scoring contributions from the entire bench, the USC women's basketball team defeated Oregon State, 62-51, in a pre-Orange Bowl match-up in front of 1,025 at the Lyon Center on Tuesday.
With the win, the Women of Troy improve to 8-4 overall, 2-1 in the Pac-10 and complete a sweep of the Oregon schools (USC beat Oregon on Sunday). The Beavers, who have dropped the last four straight, fall to 4-9 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
The Trojans had six players finish with six or more points and were led by senior Kim Gipson who contributed 11. Sophomore forward Eshaya Murphy posted a career-best 13 rebounds, including 11 offensive boards, and added a game-high four steals. USC's bench scored 25 points, while Oregon State's contributed six.
Two days after being out-rebounded by Oregon, the Women of Troy made up for the performance by posting 45 rebounds to the Beavers' 28. Both teams shot poorly as USC finished at 34.9 percent from the field and Oregon State shot 38.3 percent.
Beavers forward Kim Butler hit a jumper at 13:55 in the first half to give OSU its first and only lead of the game, 11-10. USC responded with a 10-0 run to go ahead for good. The Women of Troy entered halftime with a 30-20 advantage.
USC maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half and led by as much as 19 points, 60-41, with only 2:25 remaining. In a last-minute effort to get back in the game, the Beavers hit back-to-back three-pointers, two free throws and a jumper to come within nine, 60-51, at the one-minute-mark. The Trojans managed to hold off their efforts for the 62-51 win.
The Women of Troy continue conference play this week at Washington and Washington State for games on Friday, Jan. 7, and Sunday, Jan. 9, respectively. USC's Jan. 7 game against the Huskies will be televised live on Fox Sports West 2.
