WSU Falls To California 64-56

BERKELEY, Calif. - Washington State's Kate Benz, Charmaine Jones and Jessica Perry each scored 11 points in the Cougars' 64-56 loss to the California Golden Bears in Pacific-10 Conference women's basketball action, Tuesday at Haas Pavilion.

The loss dropped the Cougars to 4-9 overall and 0-4 in Pac-10 play. Cal improved to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

Cal was led by 14 points apiece from Leigh Gregory and Jessica Lawson.

After an exchange of baskets to open the game, Cal went on a 10-0 run to open a 12-2 advantage nearly four minutes into the contest.

Cal extended its lead to 14 but a 9-0 WSU run brought the Cougars back to within single digits at 21-16 with 8:43 remaining. The Cougars got as close as four on two occasions before heading into halftime down 34-27.

Cal began the first half making five of its first six shots en route to a 13-of-25 (52 percent) shooting performance over the opening 20 minutes. WSU missed four of its first five attempts but rebounded to end the first half 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) from the field.

Cal opened the second half with six consecutive points to re-establish its double-digit lead but WSU answered with six straight points of its own to bring the margin back to its halftime deficit.

But WSU's run was responded to by another run from Cal. The Bears scored seven consecutive points to extend its lead back to 14 at 47-33 with 12:37 remaining. The Cougars would get no closer than seven the rest of the way.

For the game, WSU shot 22-of-52 (42.3 percent) from the field while Cal was 23-of-47 (48.9 percent). It was the Cougars second-best shooting performance of the season, exceeded only by a 43.8 percent effort against Portland State, Dec. 3.

WSU has little time to rest from the road trip as it returns home to face No. 22 UCLA, Friday, Jan. 7 for a 7 p.m. tip at Friel Court.
