No. 2 UCLA Knocks Off No. 8 Beavers

Jan. 14, 2005

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Tight scoring by the judges made kept the scores low Friday night as the No. 2-ranked Bruins beat No. 8 Oregon State 194.500-192.875 in front of 3,852 fans at Gill Coliseum. The scores were well below those posted by both teams last week when UCLA tallied a score of 197.300 and Oregon State won its meet with a score of 195.200.

Oregon State had good performances on all four apparatus and showed marked improvement on the balance beam after struggling in that rotation last week.

The Beavers got off to a solid start with impressive vaults by Megan Devencenzi and Angela Morales posting 9.775 marks. Heather Justus added a solid performance scoring 9.725, and OSU counted a 9.650 from Thérèse Videan and 9.40 from Kim Sedlak.

Oregon State trailed by .200 after the first rotation and had some minor struggles with the first two bar routines, but the next four had strong performances and built momentum through the rest of the rotation. Chrissy Lamun anchored the bars team scoring 9.775 and Videan added a 9.750 score. Lindsay Nelson posted a 9.70, Chelsea Plourde had 9.60 and Justus scored 9.475. Meanwhile, on the vault the Bruins notched three routines of 9.825 or better.

The Beavers were determined to prove that last week's performance on the beam was a fluke and did so with a six-for-six performance with all six receiving 9.60 or better. Daylee Ingalls and Lamun led the way with each scoring 9.675. Courtney Dennison and Plourde each scored 9.625 and Morales and Claire Pierce each put up 9.60 scores.

Oregon State ended the meet on a strong note with back-to-back 9.750 performances from Morales and Videan on the floor exercise. Devencenzi tallied a 9.60, Pierce added a 9.575 and Justus 9.375.

UCLA's Tasha Schwikert earned the all-around title with a score of 39.050, while her sister, and fellow freshman, Jordan Schwikert finished second at 39.025. The Beavers did not have any athletes compete in all four events Friday.

The Oregon State gymnasts return to action next Friday night at 7 p.m. at Gill Coliseum to host No. 1-ranked Utah. The Beavers are scheduled to sign autographs following the meet.
