Jan. 17, 2005
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- USC women's basketball sophomore forward Eshaya Murphy has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 10-16, conference commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Murphy, a native of Van Nuys, Calif., averaged 16.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.5 assists in two games as USC swept Arizona and No. 25 Arizona State. She shot a combined 66.7 percent from the field (10-of-15), 66.7 percent from three-point rage (4-of-6) and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the free throw line.
In USC's 67-54 victory over Arizona on Jan. 14, Murphy scored a career-high 18 points and added nine boards. She led the team in both categories and tied a career-high with three assists.
In the 66-45 upset of 25th-ranked Arizona State on Jan. 16, Murphy scored 15 points and made 6-of-9 from the free throw line. The victory was the sixth consecutive for the Women of Troy, marking the first time they have won six in a row since 1994. The win over the Sun Devils also qualified as USC's first over a ranked team since last season -- a 59-56 win over then-No. 6 Stanford on Jan. 25, 2004.
USC (12-4 overall, 6-1 Pac-10) is tied for first place in the Conference race with Stanford heading into this weekend's games. The Women of Troy will travel to the Bay Area to take on California and the No. 6/4 Cardinal on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
The Player of the Week honor is the first for Murphy and USC's 31st all-time selection.
