Cal Baseball Defeats UC Irvine, 5-4, in 11 innings

Feb. 5, 2005

BERKELEY, CA - Freshman second baseman Josh Satin hit an RBI single up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the California baseball team (1-2) its first win of the season with a 5-4 victory over UC Irvine (1-1) Saturday at Evans Diamond. Satin scored sophomore center fielder Brennan Boesch, who was hit by Anteater reliever Jimmy Alstot to lead off the 11th. Alstot was able to get the next two outs, but a wild pitch had advanced Boesch to second. With two outs, Alstot intentionally walked Mike Van Winden before yielding the game-winning hit to Satin.

Satin had caught a line drive by Chad Lundahl with two runners on in the top of the 11th to stop a UC Irvine rally.

The winning pitcher for the Bears was senior reliever Matt Swanson, who pitched the final 3.3 innings with two hits, no runs, one walk and one strikeout. After having given up 10 runs to UC Irvine on Friday, Cal received solid pitching from sophomore starter Brandon Morrow (4.7 innings, five hits, four runs, three walks, five strikeout) and senior reliever Travis Talbott (3.0 innings, two hits, no runs) on Saturday.

At the plate, the Bears were paced by Boesch, who was 3-for-3 on the day with a double and the game-tying homer in the sixth inning. Cal had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Satin off of Anteater starter Justin Cassel (5.0 innings, seven hits, three runs, one walk, four strikeouts). UC Irvine tied the game with a RBI single by Chad Lundahl in the top of the second, only to see the Bears go ahead on a two-run single by senior third baseman Matt Einspahr in the bottom of the second for a 3-1 lead. The Anteaters battled back and took a 4-3 advantage, scoring two runs in the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Jaime Martinez, and a run in the fifth inning of a RBI single by Matt Anderson.

Other top hitters for Cal were Van Winden (2-for-4, double) and freshman catcher Travis Howell (2-for-5).

Cal will next host UC Irvine in the third game of the three-game series at Evans Diamond, Sunday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. The Bears had fallen to the Anteaters, 10-1, on Friday.

Home Runs:
