Defending national champion and sixth-ranked UCLA holds a tight one-shot lead over fifth-ranked Washington in the 15-team field. The Bruins shot a three-under, 281 in the second round to take the lead, 579 over the Huskies' 580. Cal (585) is in third. The Bears' Sofie Andersson leads the individual portion of the tournament with a seven-under, 135. Andersson shot 68-67 for the day and made seven birdies. UNLV's Elena Kurokawa is second, five shots behind with a two-under 140. She shot 67-73 and finished the day with nine birdies.
After recording her second win of the season less than two weeks ago, sophomore Hannah Hoch is struggling on the par-71 loop as she has a share of 42nd place with a 12-over par 154. Hoch opened with a season high first round 79, but was able to improve four strokes and 14 places on the leaderboard going into Wednesday's third round.
Teammate Allison Rella also finds herself struggling in her second career Spartan Invitational as she went round for round with Hoch, carding a 79-75-154.
Maria Persson-Gulda had the team's strongest first to second round performance as the junior was in 68th place after an opening round and season high 83, and shaved 11 strokes off her second loop for a 1-over 72 and a 35 place leap into 48th place.
The Buffs' low score after the first round, Jess Ellis was one stroke shy of tying her season low round with a 7-over 78 and was in 43rd place before matching that score in the second, while the majority of the field improved, to fall to 51st as CU's fourth score. Junior Jessie Malcolm is in 63rd with an 84-77-161 after climbing six spots in the individual race.
The Buffs struggled in the tournament's first round, carding a 319 in the opening loop, their slowest start to the annual tournament since turning in a 317 in 2001.
The third, and final, round tees off on holes 1 and 10 at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.
