Washington's Lillibridge, Arizona's Melancon Named Pac-10 Baseball Player/Pitcher of the Week
March 15, 2005
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - WASHINGTON junior shortstop Brent Lillibridge and ARIZONA sophomore right-handed pitcher Mark Melancon have been named Pac-10 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 8-14, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Lillibridge, from Everett, Wash., went 4-for-11 (.374) in three Husky wins last week (one over Portland and two over Pacific), with all four hits leaving the park for home runs. He hit one homer against Portland, a grand slam against Pacific in the first game and then two homers in Thursday's win over the Tigers. He finished the three games with eight runs batted in and seven runs scored, having walked once and been hit by a pitch three times. He also stole a base and fielded 21 errorless chances. Lillibridge is currently riding an 11-game hitting streak, longest of the year by a Husky hitter, and has yet to make an error all season as the UW's everyday starter at shortstop.
Melancon, from Golden, Colo., was perfect in Arizona's series victory over visiting Mississippi State last weekend. The right-hander pitched in all three games of the series, struck out seven of the 10 batters he faced and did not give up a hit or a walk to the Bulldogs in three innings of work. He earned his team-best third save of the year in Saturday's contest after entering the 7-3 game in the ninth inning with runners on first and second and no outs. He struck out the side to end the MSU scoring threat and the game.
The Player of the Week honor is the first for Lillibridge, while it is the 45th such honor for Washington. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the first for Melancon and the 30th selection all-time for Arizona.
