BOULDER - The University of Colorado track and field team opened its 2005 outdoor campaign with a strong presence at its own Potts Invitational meet in Boulder Saturday, as the Buffs competed with athletes from Northern Colorado, South Dakota, the Air Force Academy, Regis and Colorado State in a non-team scoring competition.
Highlighting the day's events for CU was the women's 1500-meter run, where Laura Zeigle, Kendall Grgas-Wheeler and Kristin Hoogheem swept the top three spots running 4:58.07, 4:59.97 and 5:02.19, respectively.
Natalie Florence (10:18.84) and Kalin Toedebusch (10:19.88) also captured the top two spots in their 3000-m race, while Jaclyn Sturm won the 200-m dash with a time of 26.24.
In field competition, the CU women secured first place in six out of eight events. Sophomore jump specialist Amberly Casey gained a victory in the long jump competition with a mark of 19-5.5, while also securing second place in the triple jump (38-3.5). Senior Liza Negriff's 39-4 foot attempt was enough for a first place finish in the triple jump. In addition, Anna Magle garnered first in the high jump by clearing a 5-7 height.
In her first outing of the season, javelin thrower Hannah Warfield-Ruffato captured a win with a throw of 139-6. Carly Newlands earned first and second place in the shot put (43-11.25) and discus throw (140-11), respectively, while fellow thrower Cortney Hutmacher completed the Buff's dominance in field events with a victory in the discus (145-10).
The Buffs also captured a handful of victories on the men's side of the competition. Keeping up their strong 3000-m presence from the indoor season, Jon Severy, Austin Baille and Payton Batliner grabbed the top three places, running 8:34.72, 8:41.08 and 8:43.92, respectively.
Eric Lee-O'Brien clocked an 11.11 to finish first in the 100-m dash, followed closely in third by Sam Napp (11.15). Posting another first and third place finish were Anthony Chiulli (1:55.39) and Nate Terry (2:00.11) in the 800-m run.
The Buffalo men also dominated the relay events, capturing first in both the 4x400-m (3:18.23) and the 4x100-m (41.60) relays.
The field events on the men's side were lead by Andy Miller's first place effort in the high jump, posting a height of 6-6.75. Thrower Zach Hazen earned second in the hammer throw (175-1.5), while James Begley rounded out the men's effort with a pair of third place finishes in the shot put (47-6.25) and discus throw (163-5).
The Buffs will return to the track on March 26 in Palo Alto, Calif. at the Stanford Invitational.
