Beavers Stumble on Floor, Win Streak Ends

March 19, 2005

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Oregon State (13-7) got off to a slow start Saturday night and despite a valiant effort, were unable to recover taking fourth in a quad meet at Arkansas. The Beavers, who came into the meet riding a string of ten straight wins, competed with an impressive group of talented gymnasts in front of 2,249 fans at Barnhill Arena for the LadyBack Classic hosted by No. 14 Arkansas. Joining the Beavers and `Backs were No. 3 Nebraska and No. 5 UCLA, both of which had previously held the top spot in the country in 2005.

'This is a good wake-up call for the post-season,' said head coach Tanya Chaplin. 'But (the Beavers) made a great comeback from the floor. We had just dug too much of a hole.'

Oregon State started the evening on, statistically, its weakest event scoring 48.300 on the floor exercise. All four teams went five-for-six in the first rotation with the `Huskers taking the early lead with a score of 49.025 on the beam. Megan Devencenzi lead off for the Beavers with a score 9.750, but the rest of the floor squad was unable to improve on that mark. Heidi Goehring scored 9.725 and Chrissy Lamun tallied a 9.700. OSU also counted a 9.625 from Angela Morales and a 9.500 from Heather Justus.

The Beavers began the comeback with the vault scoring 49.075 in the second rotation to pull within .05 of catching the LadyBacks. Therese Videan got things started on the vault with a solid 9.700 and the Beavs began building on that mark. Morales followed with a 9.775 and Heather Justus followed that by tying a personal-best with a 9.900. Daylee Ingalls, OSU's first yurchenko vaulter, tallied a 9.800 before Yuki Lamb completed the OSU scoring with a 9.900 of her own. While the vault scores were enough to move up on Arkansas, the Bruins and `Huskers continued to move out on the Beavs. During the rotation Richelle Simpson of Nebraska scored the second 10.0 on the floor in Barnhill Arena history.

OSU continued its solid night with a six-for-six performance on the bars. The Beavers' bars team built progressively on each others marks but still continued to lose ground to the other three teams. Ingalls got things started for the Beavers with a score of 9.650, which was followed by Chelsea Plourde's 9.750. Goehring posted a 9.775 and Lindsay Nelson and Videan put up a pair of 9.800's. Lamun finished things for OSU with 9.850.

With UCLA and Nebraska fighting for first in the meet, Oregon State trailed Arkansas 146.700-146.350. The Beavers moved to the beam, their best event, seeking to move past the host team.

The fight the Beavs put up was valiant as the beam team posted a season-high but the effort came up just short. Three season-highs on the beam for the Beavers led by Plourde's 9.925 brought them within .075 of the LadyBacks. Goehring tied her season-high with a 9.850 and Courtney Dennison earned a season-high 9.800. The Beavers also needed a 9.825 from Lamun and a 9.800 from Morales to close the gap. Claire Pierce also exhibitioned scoring a season-high 9.775.

'The team is fired up and ready to make a statement at the Pac-10 championships,' said Chaplin.

Oregon State concludes the regular season next week at the Pac-10 Championships at Berkeley, Calif. The Beavers seek to improve upon last year's third place finish at the meet.
