UCLA Falls In Close Race Against USC

March 20, 2005 -- The UCLA Women's Rowing team endured their first lost of the season against USC, a team ranked 14th in the nation. The race, held at the Bruin's Marina Del Rey 2000m course, was part of the Lexus Gauntlet Challenge, which grants the winning team five points towards the school's overall point total. The Bruins finished the dual race with a score of 2, one point behind USC's 3. UCLA recorded wins in the varsity 4+ and the novice 8+, with times of 7:05.7 and 7:02.0.

In the second varsity 8+, UCLA and USC finished in a dead heat with a time of 6:33.4. In the varsity 8+, the Bruins came in 2.6 seconds after the Trojans. For the Lexus Gauntlet challenge, the five points awarded to rowing went to the Trojans.

This dual race between the two schools showed the great improvement the Bruins have made over the past year. The Bruin's came in 2.6 seconds after USC in the varsity 8+, a huge jump from the 10 seconds they fell behind the Trojans last year. In addition, the tie in the second varsity 8+ adds more fuel to the rivalry, with both teams looking forward to meeting again at the Pac-10 Championships.

1. USC - 6:26.3

2. UCLA - 6:28.09

Women Second Varsity 8+ (2 points):

1. UCLA - 6:33.4

Women Varsity 4+ (1 point):

1. UCLA - 7:05.7

2. USC - 7:11.02

Women Second Varsity 4+:

1. USC - 7:26.1

2. UCLA - 7:34.05

Women Novice 8+ (1 point):

1. UCLA - 7:02.0
