Golf Teams Finish at Duck Invitational

March 22, 2005

Eugene, Ore. - On the final day of competition at the Oregon Duck Invitational, the Oregon State women's golf team tied for eighth and the men's team placed ninth.

The women shot a 319 during Tuesday's final round at Shadow Hills Country Club, leading to a total of 942, tied with Nevada. California won the tournament with a 908.

Julie Uhrik finished in ninth place, ending her tournament with a 76 and shooting 226 overall. Other OSU players were Jessi Gebhardt (tied for 27th), Jill Ferrante (tied for 32nd), Alex Lucio (tied for 63rd) and Kelly Kerkvliet (tied for 65th).

Kay Hoey of Long Beach State won the tournament with a 218.

'We played pretty well until the last five holes,' OSU Coach Rise Lakowske said. 'We went 11-over on the last five holes and that's not a good finish for us. We probably could have moved ahead of Washington. I don't know if we lost focus or if the weather got to us. You'd think we would be used to it, but we're not. The plus is that we started well. Julie played well again and this was a good event for her.'

OSU's men had a final round of 298 at Eugene Country Club, giving the Beavers a three-round total of 882. Washington won the tournament with an 860.

OSU had two golfers finish in a tie for 16th at 218: Cameron MacKenzie and Ryan Gilmour, who shot a 74 and a 75, respectively, on the final day. Other OSU golfers included Brad Simpson (tied for 41st), Tim Sundseth (tied for 59th) and Vincent Johnson (tied for 64th).

Competing as individuals, Clayton Moe tied for 41st, Jeremiah Oliver and Mitch Gillis each tied for 55th, Jay Ross was 77th and Jonathan Green was 90th.

Michael Putnam of Pepperdine and James Lepp of Washington shared the individual title, as each shot a 208.

'Two days in a row, we played pretty good golf but gave it away in the end,' OSU Coach Brian Watts said. 'We lost our focus on the last few holes and it cost us about 17 shots. Playing against a good field, you can't afford to make those mistakes at the end of a round. This puts us in a position where we have to do some good things at our next few tournaments.'
