No. 12 Women's Tennis Heads to the Desert

March 22, 2005

Bruins Head to Arizona . . .
The No. 12-ranked UCLA women's tennis team (9-4; 2-1 Pac-10) continues Pac-10 play this week, heading to the desert to take on Arizona (6-6; 0-1) and Arizona State (5-4; 1-0). The Arizona schools were in Los Angeles back in mid-February, however rain washed out both of those matches. The Bruins will take on the Wildcats this Friday in Tucson beginning at 1:30 p.m. Following that match, UCLA will drive to Tempe for a Noon showdown with the Sun Devils on Saturday. Both of this weekend's matches will count in the Pac-10 standings.

Bruins Roll Over No. 13 Longhorns, 6-1 . . .
After suffering a close 4-3 loss to Texas a year ago in Austin, UCLA bounced back with a convincing 6-1 victory over the No. 13 Longhorns last week at the LATC. The Bruins never let Texas into the match, sweeping all three doubles matches, including the first four singles matches, taking a 5-0 lead before the Longhorns were able to get on the board. Both Daniela Bercek and Riza Zalameda cruised at Nos. 1 and 2 singles respectively, as each dropped a total of two games in each of their singles matches.

Bruins Check at No. 12 Nationally . . .
UCLA moved down two spaces to No. 12 in this week's ITA National Team Rankings released on Tuesday. Individually, freshman Riza Zalameda remains the highest ranked Bruin singles player at No. 18 in the country. She is followed by No. 32 Daniela Bercek and No. 85 Laura Gordon. In doubles, Bercek and Zalameda remained at No. 3. New team rankings are released every Tuesday. Individual rankings are not due out again until April 5.

Winning Streaks . . .
Daniela Bercek and Riza Zalameda own the longest winning streak on the team, capturing their last six matches. The streak began with a 9-8(8) victory over 10th-ranked Alice Barnes and Erin Burdette of Stanford back on Feb. 25. Since then, they have won their last five, pushing their overall record to 23-3. Alex McGoodwin's five-match winning streak is currently the longest in singles play. Additionally, she has dropped just one set during the streak.

Bruins Perfect at Home . . .
UCLA has not dropped a match at the Los Angeles Tennis Center this year, owning a perfect 5-0 record. All four of the Bruins' losses this year have been either at a neutral site (Team Indoors) or on the road. Fortunately for UCLA, arguably its biggest match of the year against top-ranked Stanford will be on the LATC on April 9. Although the Bruins lost to the Cardinal once already this season, the April 9 match is the one that will count in the Pac-10 standings.

Head Coach Stella Sampras Webster . . .
Stella Sampras Webster is in her ninth season as head coach at UCLA, owning an overall record of 142-81 (.637). In her eight seasons in Westwood, the Bruins have finished in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships seven times, including a trip to the finals in 2004. As a player, Sampras Webster was a four-time All-American at UCLA from 1988-91, capturing the NCAA Doubles title (w/Allyson Cooper) as a freshman in 1988.
