No. 24 California Upsets No. 2 Northwestern, 4-2

Berkeley - The No. 24 California women's tennis team pulled off a stunning upset over No. 2 Northwestern, 4-2, at the Hellman Tennis Center. The Golden Bears improve to 10-3 overall, while Northwestern drops just its second match this year, falling to 11-2.
Cal swept the bottom half of the lineup, notching wins on courts four, five and six. Sophomore Monica Wiesener outlasted Valerie Vladea on court four, 6-3; 2-6; 7-6.
Junior co-captain Jessica Shu improved to 10-3 in dual matches, beating Jamie Peisel, 6-2; 6-4, on court five. Court six saw freshman Cristina Visico tally her 15th win of the year, beating Alexis Conill in straight sets, 6-2; 6-2.
The Bears clinched the win on court one in a tremendous match which featured two of the nation's top-ranked players, both freshmen, Cal's No. 4 Suzi Babos and the Wildcat's No. 3 Audra Cohen. Babos recovered after dropping the first set to Cohen, coming away the winner, 4-6; 6-2; 6-4. The win pushes Babos' dual match record to 11-2.
Due to a rain delay earlier in the day, doubles were not played.
The Bears remain at home this week, hosting Oregon in a Pac-10 Conference match Friday, March 25 at 12:00 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Center.
