Leah Nelson's Two-Run Homer Lifts Cardinal To 4-2 Victory

Stanford, Calif. - Senior catcher Leah Nelson hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning to give No. 5 Stanford softball a 4-2 win over Hawaii this evening at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium in their opening game of the Stanford . The Cardinal are improve to 20-3 overall while the Wahine drop to 19-15.

With the score knotted at 0-0, Hawaii's Kate Robinson hit a solo homerun to leftfield to put the Rainbow Wahine on the board.

UH added another run in the top of the sixth when Kristi Yoshizawa scored on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the seventh, Erin Howe reached base on an error by the second baseman. Then Becky McCullough hit a two-run homerun to centerfield to tie up the game.

In the eighth inning, with the international tiebreaker rule in effect, Leah Nelson hit a walk-off two-run homerun to end the game, scoring Michelle Smith as well.

Junior Laura Severson (10-2) picked up the win in the circle in relief, pitching two shutout innings. Hawaii's Melissa Coogan (10-7) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in seven innings of work.

The Cardinal will face St. Mary's in tonight's final game at 7 p.m.

In today's earlier games UNLV beat Illinois, 12-2 (5), Hawaii defeated Illinois, 7-2, UNLV beat Northwestern, 2-1, and Northwestern defeated St. Mary's, 16-0 (5).
