Cal Baseball Defeats Washington State, 11-4

BERKELEY, CA - Cal took advantage of five Washington State errors and scored 11 runs on 15 hits, defeating the Cougars, 11-4, Friday afternoon at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears were led by the hitting of freshman shortstop Kyle Spraker, who had a three-run homer in Cal's fourth inning. Cal improves to 18-9 and 2-0 in the Pac-10, while the Cougars fall to 15-12, 0-2. The Bears defeated Washington State, 13-2, on Thursday.
Cal had several hitting stars on the day besides Spraker, who hit his first collegiate home run in the fourth and finished the game 2-for-2 with three RBI. Freshman Mike Van Winden was 3-for-5 with two RBI doubles, and sophomore right fielder Chris Errecart was 2-for-5 with a solo home in the fifth inning. Brennan Boesch (2-for-5, double), Josh Satin (2-for-4, RBI), Allen Craig (2-for-5, RBI) and Garrett Bussiere (2-for-4) also had multiple hit days for the Bears.
Cal's winning pitcher was junior right-hander Adam Gold, who threw 6.0 innings with six hits, four runs, three earned runs, three walks and three strikeouts, to improve his record to 4-2. The losing pitcher for WSU was starter Wayne Daman, Jr., who lost his first game of the year (4-1, 5.0 innings, eight hits, nine runs, six earned runs, two walks).
Cal scored the day's first run on a Van Winden RBI double in the third inning. The Cougars came right back and took the lead on a two-run homer by Brady Everett in the top of the fourth. However, the Bears then exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a RBI single by Craig and Spraker's three-run homer to take a 5-2 lead.
WSU scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Cal kept its distance with a run in the fifth on Errecart's homer and five runs in the sixth on RBI by Van Winden, Errecart, Satin, and fielding errors by the Cougars' third baseman and center fielder.
The Bears will next play the third game of the three-game series versus Washington State, Saturday, Mar. 26 at 12 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
