Cardinal Softball Falls To Northwestern, 7-2

Stanford, Calif. - The fifth-ranked Stanford softball team fell this afternoon to Northwestern, 7-2, in the Stanford Tournament at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal fall to 21-4 on the year while the Wildcats improve to 18-8 overall.

NU jumped on the board early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. They added two more runs in the third to make the score 6-0.

Stanford scored two runs in the top of the fourth when Michelle Smith hit her 10th homerun of the season with Lauren Lappin on base.

The Wildcats would score one more run in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 7-2.

Freshman Lauren Nydam (6-2) took the loss for Stanford, allowing four runs on three hits in one inning of work. Eileen Canney (10-3) picked up the win in the circle for the Wildcats, pitching 6.2 innings with six strikeouts and two runs scored.

Michelle Smith went 2-for-4 at the plate for Stanford with two RBI and a run scored. Meghan Sickler also chipped in two hits (2-for-3) while Lauren Lappin went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

The Cardinal are back in action this afternoon, taking on Illinois in their second game of the day.
