No. 5 UCLA Blanks Arizona, 7-0

LOS ANGELES - The fifth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team (16-2; 1-0 Pac-10) started the Pac-10 season on a good note Friday, posting a 7-0 victory over Arizona (7-7; 0-1 Pac-10) at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

UCLA, which registered its 11 shutout of the season, was in control from the beginning, taking all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

The Bruins continued to dominate once singles play began, taking all six matches in straight sets. Sophomore Benjamin Kohlloeffel and senior Chris Lam turned in the most convincing victories on the day, as both dropped just one game each. Kohlloeffel was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Colin O'Grady at court No. 1, while Lam dispatched of Paul Warkentin, 6-1, 6-0 at court No. 4.

The most competitive match of the day came at court No. 2, where seventh-ranked Luben Pampoulov needed a second-set tiebreaker to defeat 47th-ranked Roger Matalonga, 6-2, 7-6(2). Friday marked Pampoulov's first match since Mar. 1, as he has been out of action due to injury.

Other straight-set winners on the day for UCLA were Kris Kwinta, Philipp Gruendler and Mathieu Dehaine.

UCLA hosts the Arizona State tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
